Becoming UMDT

The University of Minnesota Dance Team utilizes a recruiting-only model for team selection, and we’re committed to making the process clear and  manageable for all prospective student-athletes. Under this team selection model, no formal in-person tryouts will be held. This allows the staff to gather a holistic view of potential student-athletes as a student, athlete, and person over a range of time. Please refer to the FAQ for details, and ensure all required  materials are submitted by the recommended timeframe.

We are very EXCITED to be a part of the Common College Dance Team Recruitment Video & Timeline, and will leverage the September 1 early submission deadline.

RECRUITMENT SUBMISSIONS FOR 2027-2028 TEAM SELECTION ARE NOW CLOSED.

  • In addition to advanced technical abilities, we want athletes who are coachable, hardworking, and can represent themselves, the team and the university with pride and professionalism!

While members of our team are student-athletes, they are STUDENTS first, so strong academic standing is important. The coaching staff will help recruits navigate the admissions process, but you must be admitted to the University (Twin Cities campus) to be a member of the team. It is important the University is a good fit for you academically as well as culturally.

We want dancers who are PASSIONATE about the University of Minnesota! While elite athletes may have many options when it comes to which team they can join, we are looking for athletes who are serious about UMDT, and communicate with the coaches accordingly! We always say we are not looking for the BEST dancers, we are looking for the RIGHT dancers. Being invested in our team and culture, and sharing those feelings throughout the recruitment process are a great way to show you are a great fit!

  • Athletes graduating high school in 2027 are welcome to submit an Official Recruitment Submission. In order to formally initiate a submission for the Recruitment Process, there are a few materials that you must submit.

Check out our Official Recruitment Materials page for all information.
